Water – Your new best friend!

Anyone who has been working on their overall health for any length of time has heard it: Drink lots of water. Coach Rish says we need four litres a day, and that’s definitely consistent with all the information out there. And we know it flushes toxins, and that the body is largely made up of water, caffeine is a diuretic, yada yada yada. We hear this advice so often, we truly do lose sight of what a difference proper hydration can make to the actual qualitWater_ Your new best friendy of our lives.

For many of us, fat loss is the primary goal. Sometimes, when we are making all our efforts with that single goal in mind, we forget about the underlying reasons behind what we are doing. At your introductory workshop, this is the WHY we imagined to help motivate us when things get boring or hard.

Acute dehydration is a very dangerous state for the body that requires swift medical intervention. However, long before these sorts of life-threatening symptoms appear, a body that is not adequately hydrated will not function properly in more subtle ways. Studies have shown that even a 1% drop in hydration can cause a 5% loss of brain function. Since we tend to be dehydrated, you may be so used to your body feeling these ways that you are not even aware you are in a state of toleration.

Here are some of the day to day ways inadequate hydration affects you:

  • Short term memory loss
  • Concentration and focus
  • Increased joint back and joint pain
  • Stamina and endurance
  • Hunger pangs
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety (particularly for women)
  • Perception
  • Adverse mood changes

All of these factors play a role in our overall stress level, so upping your hydration game will not only reduce these symptoms but impact your overall quality of life by easing your stress. The truth is that by the time you feel thirsty, the body is already in a state of mild dehydration. Sleep is actually a dehydrating activity! If you don’t do so already, start your day with 16 oz of water, as soon as you get up. Then a good strategy for maintaining optimum hydration is to drink 8 oz for every hour you are awake. You can monitor your body’s state of hydration through the colour of your urine: the lighter the colour (other than urine affected by supplements), the better your body is being hydrated.

The bottom line is that water is critical to every single intricate function of our bodies. It might be hard to relate to these because they are going on invisibly 24/7. But you can change how you feel every day and how effective you are in the world in very beneficial, practical ways simply by drinking more water. Give it a try and see!
